I’m a bit behind with our diary this year but will try to get caught up and keep it going to the end. Our seeds started were 2332.5 Paton,2749 Gienger, 2168 Werner, and our own 2117.5 Bryson. Sadly the 2749 was slow to come up and was replaced with another 2117. This is a picture of our four keepers. All four not much different and very agreeable

On the previous post the plants were day 9. We left the plastic on over winter and this is a picture of the rye inside. Over 3 feet tall on the 24 April

This shows the difference of the rye outside 2 patches versus in house

We have been using clear plastic 500 ml to see the roots and cover with a dark one. What we see is that within one day of seeing the cotts the roots are already turning sideways at the bottom of the pot and next day you see this the roots going back up. So is it good to have a ball of roots in the pot? We transfer to larger pots but after ten days think we still have that problem

We cut the bottom off our starter pots and use the lid as the base. This makes more room for roots and makes it easy to lift off the pot when transplanting

This shows the box inside the small cold frame. It’s so much easier to keep the small plants warm

These guys are everywhere this year they are part of the chain of life in a no till system like ours. We use an organic soap from Greensafe,it also feeds the microbes.

We find that the weight of the leaf falls back and keeps the vine up. So taking the weight of the leaf off with a wire helps to allow the vine find the ground

Started to bury on 12 May. The 2117.5 has very aggressive roots.

There are a lot more snails this year so I decided to relocate them. On the good side way less slugs. Do they not coexist well? Since I cleaned this bunch away not many are reappearing now

This is the JMS we make with soil sea salt and pumpkin leaves which we pump through the drip lines. The leaves are to grow plant pacific microbes. With the water at 80 degrees it takes 24 to 36 hours to make.

The fall rye did not come back after cutting it down in the greenhouse maybe it was cut too low . The patches outside were not cut as low. The goal is to have living roots in the ground at all times and use a folding saw to cut the roots at ground level so as not to disturb the soil.

The 10 x 10 huts came off today with the 2117.5 A well ahead of the other 3 plants.

When the hut came off the 2332.5 the main was uncovered and I found the vine had split about 10 inches long that had opened up. Disappointing to say the least !

We use this saw to cut the roots of the rye just at ground level and under the drip line. I have tried knives but they get dull after only a couple of cuts but I now use a dulled blade on the saw works well and doesn’t cut drip line.

The 2168 12 feet out side vines starting to do well now. Winds were 55 kilometers per hour so had to make temporary wind brake.

The 2117.5 A 12 feet out never been the fastest but solid and doing well.

Last post was 2117.5 B. The 2117.5 A in greenhouse is way ahead of the others 16 feet out with at least double the leaves of the other plants. Only problem it is scorching in the sun so I we have to wet it often mid day.

The 2332.5 14 feet out got a rough start. It is a very course plant with large leaves and doesn’t wilt much compared to the 2117.5 A. Side vines are doing well now.
