I live in the North where the sun is in the southern half of the sky. Will my vines tend to run to the sun and turn South?
Also can you train a main vine through 90 degrees say 10 feet from the main root without doing any harm?
This is to help me decide where to plant.
Cheers AXC

you can train the main vine to do a 90 degree
pretty easily. no harm to the plant at all.
just make it a nice gentle curveover a few feet-
instead of like a 90 bend in a pipe.
most people shape their plant in a Christmas tree
shape. with main going straight and the secondaries
90 degrees to each out each side. the vines are
easy to train. you can use the little BBQ squewers,
loop of a cloths hanger, etc to train the vines.

Thanks for the advice,I have full sun and full wind to go with it,theres nothing but sea between me and New York.
I'd like to plant by the south facing hedge cos its warmer there.I met Alun on this site a couple of weeks ago and he's going to fix me up with some seed,I'll be working in some cow manure this weekend then I'm ready to go.Only 5 months to wait!

glad to hear you met alun he should be able to help you out with things on your side of the pond that we might not deal with here i try and let my plants grow E.N.E. because most of the time the wind blows over my patch to e.n.e.the wind travels over the plant from stump twords the vine tips let 1 plant go in a different direction heavy wind ripped the plant out of the ground (the wind breaks i had made weren't big enough or ancored as good as they should have) in any case i don't want you to loose your plant

I'll put windbreaks on my list.
Does anybody take a catch crop, early potatoes, lettuce etc.off their patch before the pumpkin gets to the far side

wait until you see how fast a well fed ag plant grows when the weather breaks and the air and soil are both warm plants can grow 12 to 24 inches a day in all directions it doesn't take long before other plants are buried under pumpkin vine

Last week my patch got 6ins cow manure,8ozs 12-12-12 and 16ozs sea sand per sq.yd.I ploughed it under and it got buried quite deep about 10ins.I could work a little more into the surface but I don't want to overdo it,there are no leaves around here what would you do next?

sounds like your off to a good start i would get a soil test done with adding lots of manure or organic material the ph will drop alun jones should be able to help you find a place to do that on your side of the pond see what the test says then go from there
