My pumpkin on the main vine is getting closer and closer to a buried secondary. I've been cutting leaves off the secondary as the pumpkin grows closer, but what should I do about the vine if the pumpkin is going to grow over it? Should I cut it off, just leave it buried, or dig it up and move it a over a few inches?

As long as the secondary doesn't have to rise with the main as the fruit is growing I have just been trenching under the secondaries enough to let them settle so the fruit can go over the top of them. On others that are close to the stem and need to rise, I am moving them.

I agree with Monty Pumpkins won't "crush" a vine. . .but make sure your stem can move up as pumpkin grows. I've had pumpins set atop vines with no problem, but if they're setting on a vine connected to their own stem they can pull themselves off as they expand out and up.

I have had 2 this year that grew over the secondary just before the stem. On each one the pumpkin started to stress the vine and stem, and I had to cut the secondary off. That relieved the stress both times. If I hadn't done this the pumpkin would have slpit the stem or the vine.
