What is the best type of plant to rotate with pumpkins? The best plant that will leave it's nutrients behind when tilled into the soil? For instance, I am going to plant this plant in a vacant lot in 2005, then I will till that plant(s) into the ground, and then plant pumpkins there in 2007. Thank you for reading my post and have a wonderful growing or wiegh off year.

Find a soil building cover mix...with legumes...If not soybeans, fava beans or 3 crops of buckwheat. Peaceful Valley Farm Supply has more cover crops.

Alfalfa and sweet clover are deep rooted and will draw some nutrients up from the subsoil. They also add a fair amount of nitrogen to the soil and a lot of organic matter.

Along the same lines, what is a good cover crop to plant on the patch for fall/winter between seasons?

A lot of farmers in my area use winter rye after they harvest soybeans or chop corn silage. It adds a lot of organic matter, and the natural alleopathic comppounds that the roots put out really help with weed control. It should work great for a pumpkin patch. I tried winter wheat last year, but the deer kept it eaten off.
