I was wondering since i live on the mississippi coast if a hurricane could do major damage to my pumpkin plant??? If so then any idea on how to protect it.

LOL. Run for cover! The wind well, anything that can withstand a hurricane force wind deserves a prize! I hope you and your family are safe.

Pumpkin,,heres 2 pics,,before hurricane dennis,,and after hurricane dennis..This was over 225 miles east of the center,,maybe 50 mph winds..So if your on the mississippi coast,,"can you say bye bye"?As big as it is,I dont think theres anything your gonna be able to do to protect it..Only thing I can say is to start praying it dont hit the mississippi coast,,and I'm not saying pray for your pumpkins,,pray for the idiots who will not leave the coastal sections..They are saying Catorgory 4-5...Gonna be alot of houses and personal property destroyed before all is said and done..Hope this answers your question...I hope your not right on the coast..I experienced a Cat 2 hurricane in 85 being 120 miles inland,,it hit with 105-120 mph winds at landfall..My county was hit hard old pine trees 20 ft around were toppled like dominios..If your with in 100 miles of the coast,,take my advice,,pack up and leave...Good Luck!!!!

We got a hurricane a few years ago in early september here and I survived it by doing the following.....I used a hoophouse (40 x 25)made of 1 inch electrical pvc...flexible enough to bend, sway, and spring back when pushed. I then covered it with heavy plastic sheeting on all four sides leaving the bottom 1.5 feet or so open. I then put some windscreen fabric overtop of that and secured the screen material, the plastic sheeting and the hoophouse structure itself with rebar pins driven at an angle into the ground....I tied rope to the rebar pins and tossed it overtop and across the structure and tied to rebar...then crossed it overtop again and again in a crisscross pattern until I was out of rope. The structure needed to breath (gap at bottoms), needed to flex (pvc pipe flexes well), needed to prevent the 5 inches of rain(plastic sheeting), and needed not to land in my nieghbors yard (rope,fabric/netting). It worked fine but was quite an effort.....G

G,,this isnt a 70-90 mph hurricane..When hurricanes make it to you,,they are usually on the down side because of the cooler atlantics waters..We are talking 130-150 mph winds to the east side of landfall..The eye is currently 40 miles wide...Suppose to be a cat 4-5 (150-160 mph) when it makes landfall.. I still say if your gonna be with in 40 miles of the eye,,leave,,forget your pumpkin,,lol...I think Alabama to Panama city will be landfall..We'll see..Good Luck...

I lived in Biloxi as a kid. If the hurricane comes there then the pumpkin will be the least of your worries. The best advice is don't worry about the pumpkin , be safe. What Jeff got was a walk in the park compared to what your potentially facing. be safe ..........Bart

"1. I knew Jeff would poo-poo my comment."

Glenn,,poo-poo your comment? How many hurricanes has LI ever had with over 100 mph winds? It has nothing to do with your comment..We experience hurricanes every year down here,,I've seen major destruction other than tv coverage.I've seen first hand..I guarntee that what held for you there will not hold up in Miss if this storm hits there..It'll take houses,,roofs, cars, semi's,,what ever is in its path..My comment was not aimed at your comment..Sorry to see you took it that way..My comment is for pumpkin lover..If it hits Miss,,kiss the pkin plant bye.If a pumpkin plant means more to you than your life, then you have problems..Theres already been 7 killed with this storm,,,and a semi blowed over on an I-95 over pass in Florida,,and that was just a cat 1..

I saw where they were opening up the Superdome for those who couldn't leave town. If that storm even comes close to a catagory 5 by time it gets there I don't think that would be safe either.

Weather channel is stating 160 mph sustained winds now. If you live anywhere near expected landfall, get the heck out of there. I used to live in the south, Texas, Florida, and South Carolina. I have also seen first hand what a strong hurricane can do (I was in Charleston, SC when Hugo hit). If you take a direct hit, or even a near miss (within 100 miles) you can probably kiss the plants goodby, along with everything else.

In my house (I was going to say "up here", but I'm sure that would excite the north-south chip again) we assume a certain base level of common sense. Yeah, if the storm is going to hit you your shouldn't be worrying about the pumpkins....duh.
But, since a very good % of the people w/in influence of the storm will not be in the brunt of the storm I thought what I did and how it performed was a pertanent post. I didn't want to imply that our hurricanes were as good as yours....just that you can go along way towards protecting the plants and what specific elements you need to protect your plants from. I also forgot that you should spray fingiside BEFORE the storm and shortly AFTER the storm passes. These storms that come from the south bring up the nasties from the south with it.

my grandmother and mother have gone through countless storms and hurricanes living in puerto rico. one in preticular, a cat 5, caused my grtandmother to have no water and no power for a month. keep in mind this was the 1940's-50's but still. Be safe.

If anyone is growing in New Orleans they better start carving their best fruit into a regatta boat right now.

I really hope they get out in time.
