Now that September is a breath away and the nights are getting cooler and cooler. Is there any method of covering the stump? Ya know as the fruit is covered...all of my vines are covered except for the stump. I am thinking of throwing a blanket over it as well...What do you think and secondly what do you do? Thanks all...Nezzie

nezzie covering the stump will be of no benefit to keeping the plant or pumpkin growing besides, the stump need fresh air
blanketing the fruit is good, covering the stump is not necessary
actually we remove any soil from previous main vine covering shortly after squash vine borer activity has passed this allows for easy inspection and detection of problems
if you really want to hold the heat in during september you could lay remay over the plant this keeps the temp around ten degrees warmer under the covering

Remay is a thin fabric used as a floating row cover. I've seen printed claims of 2 degrees F of frost protection so not a whole lot of additional thermal energy will be saved. It sure can't hurt though & 2*F is good stuff some days.
Here is a link that claims frost protection down to 24*F which is 8 degrees of protection.
How it is installed would have a lot to do with how well it works. I'd guess the truth is somewhere in between.

I found a cover of remay (17g/m2) will give frost protection down to -3°C and a double layer of it will protect down to -5°C.
