If it does not go into the cavity(the inside of the pumpkin). It will continue to grow. I would dust it with a good fungicide and keep it dry. It will heal itself, and make scar tissue. This is a very common event in Giant pumpkin growing.

Buck my 1097 is the same way yours is. It split around 350 to 400 Lbs if I recall right, its well over 800Lbs now. I could see through my stem aswell but only had two places on my stem. The splits are closing now since the pumpkin keeps getting bigger and makes it harder for me to keep it dry and put stuff on it. I dont know if it closing it self is a good thing or bad though.

Oh, leave it open like Shannon said, let it air out and put deconil on it straight from the bottle, paint it on with a small art brush. Only time I would seal a split is if i knew it went to the cavity just to get a little more growth out of it. Once air hits the cavity its lights out.

buck, fred macari here, is it the 941 mac? the pumpkin will still grow. don,t put any wet paste on it. dry fungicide will do , but you can use a bleach water mix, 10% bleach. after you spray let it sit for five min. and wipe the area dry, get a fan on it!dont let it rain on it.it will seal itsself in a week or so. GOOD LUCK.
