My idea is that if you sell your gaint pumpkin you could donate that money to the american red cross for the victims of hurricane katrina or if someone else has a idea like that it would greatly appreciated if you post it.

One, of this area's, nicest pumpkins has already been given, to a local business. There will be a lot, of activity around it, to benefit the Red Cross Flood relief action.

It is a very fine idea. However it seems the Red Cross is sending signals now that they no longer want small individual donations but rather just the large corporate donations.

On of our Cub Scout den mothers tried to arrange a donation program yesterday. She was hopping mad at their reaction to her inquiry. So instead she's now coordinating our effort with her Church. They will end up with one large check.

Fortunately BSA National was originally chartered in a way that the boys may only accept physical neccesities such as canned foods, soap, towels, clothes, etc. So the cash disbursement issue is moot.

I'll bet the Salvation Army would appreciate the proceeds of a giant Pumpkin sale or auction. As I recall, the Salvation Army was on the scene first anyway.

Look into Samaritan's Purse. It is a great organization and they were one of the first on-site (I think). Each year during the holidays my kids put together a shoe box filled with toys, school supplies, socks, a toothbrush and paste and soaps. We drop them off at a church with a nice fat check and they are distributed to the less fortunate.

According to studies, church organizations donate pretty much 100% of all they receive to the needy. The Red Cross, after deducting their top man's top salary and other costs, were pretty much at the end of the list as far as forwarding the money they pick up. I don't have percentages anymore (the study is a year or two old) but it amounts to about 80% I believe. Let's not forget though, they do incredible work.
The Salvation Army would seem a good choice. The newspapers in Holland stated that the SA was the first on the scene along with various church organizations.

Why not run it through the GPC ? They want the press...are a non-profit, no? Good press....especially this time of year.

Many churchs and numerous major helping organizations are right in everyone's community. Cash direct is the most needed now and, for a long time to come.

I would hate to boggle the GPC down with fund raising which they are, in no way, presently set up, manage such funds.

While it may seem a good idea it could quickly become a monster that would defeat the purpose, of the GPC.

An auction would be a great idea, I have been throwing the idea around in my head for about a week now. Make it sort of a mini weighoff and gt the whole town involved, heck the whole area maybe. That's sad to hear the Red Cross turning down the smaller donations. Rob, samaritan's purse is a great organization and most all of the money gets to the cause. Another good one is The Convoy of Hope. It's a non profit trucking company, that distributes food/water/necesities to victims of disasters and the homless and inner city folks. They had their trucks on the road and into Mississippi the day after Katrina went through. A very Noble oranization in my eyes. Just a few of my thoughts. Mike
