Wonder if someone could answer my question that I posted on my diary? Its under Croleybend. Thanks. Wont have any pumpkins for this years local contest. I wanted a big one like over 450 pounds, but only have about a 250 lber. Oh well, there is always next year.

Nothing wrong with taking a 250 lber to the weigh-off. Those do not look like they will turn orange. What was the parentage? That should give you some kind of clue.

The parentage of this pumpkin is: Emmons 572 est 03, cross of Bobier 838-02 and Emm 1261-01. Im not familiar with the parent, just the numbers. Thanks for the encouragement to take the 250, Im still not sure if I will or not. Its just a local contest with other vegetables and first prize is $10. You see last year I grew a big one, 453 lber and not recognition in the local paper as to weight and then the other day I was listening to the radio and they were talking about the contest. Well, they gave credit for the 453 lber to another feller...talk about one wet hen...boy I was spitting nails..I even know the man who was talking and he should have known better. So of course I told him and of course he apoligized, the damage was done. He made a retraction, altho I didnt hear it. Did nt know when he would make it. So Im just digusted with the way things are handled...what would you do? Thanks for listening and perhaps my pumpkins will not turn orange but there do have an orange tinge. thanks again.

By all means take it. You and the pumpkin deserve a day with the other growers and contacts available. The weigh off is the climax, to a great summer, of learning experiences.

Absolutely take it. You'll enjoy the time with others, they will always be generous in their encouragement and it makes for a great photo-op. Just because it isn't the biggest doesn't mean you did not work at it this year.

I wish there were others who entered the contest, but sadly there are only two, me and another fellow. Its just a garden contest with all vegetables and largest pumpkin and largest watermelon. Im taking my watermelon, its about 80 lbs. Last year won with 42 lb watermelon. But the pumpkin is a matter of principal, or stubborness. I may change my mind the contest is Friday. Thanks everyone for your encouragement.
