On Sept 2 I thought my 1260 Weir had stopped growing at 137-85-86. I havnt took a measrement untill today and measured 141-85-86.
Here is my question. A pumpkin that gains 4 inches in circumference would also have to gain inches ether from side to side or a front to back measurement also right? It would have to wouldnt it??

Thanks,
Brooks

I would think it's impossible to grow 4 inches circumference with no other gains, there would have to be atleast a small gain somewhere. It gets hard to measure when big, either you mis-measured the circunference the second time, or you miss measured the ss and ee the first or second time Lol! confused???:) good part is, it doesn't matter when you weigh it;)

Brooks,
wait till you measure and re-measure ... but one of the numbers got smaller ! :)

technically it's possible, but there's very few shapes that will allow it to happen. most likely you gained about a half an inch on the other 2 measurements, but won't notice. unless you have a set pin in the ground on either side, i seem to be off a half an inch from time to time on the last 2.

I have one that is doing the same. It is growing out to the sides near the blossom end, behind where I am taking the OTT measurements.

I have one like that where the shoulders are getting bulked up and the stem end seems to be receding into the pumpkin. from stem to blossom though the numbers aren't changing much because the bulk is on either side and not the centerline where I have been taking the measurements. It is also bulking up on the sides near the blossom end which is lower and not where I take my side to side measurement. Remember this is just a tool to get an estimate and evaluate whether the fruit is still growing well. None of it matters anymore once you have it on the scale.

I hate to say this but sometimes when a pumpkin starts to go it sags and spreads a bit...this would account for a widening (circ), when the bs and ss may stay the same as it gets broader but lower.....

I took another measurement today and I came up with the same 141 circ and the other two measurments stayed the same. I have noticed on the bottom sides of my pumpkin bulging out further then the top, kinda looks like its growing wings, but I still should see it in my side to side measurment and Im not,Oh well, lol I measure the same everytime and use tape to hold the tape secure against the pumpkin. Guess Its time to put the tape measure away anyway.

G, Never thought of that untill you mentioned it but i have noticed my 1097 sagging, Looks like the top of my pumpkin is spreading out and pushing twards the bottom of the pumpkin, almost like something heavy was laying on top of it.

Thanks guys
Brooks

Then stop leaning over on it to get the tape around the stem end !

i like to poke my finger down into the earth when holding the tape doing an over the top or side to side measurement

i get growth up to pickin every year l o l

Brooks....my 1268-04 went wide once there was a hole in the stem end. It is possible that there might be a hole on the bottom.

Yeah I've heard the same as Stan. Better start feeling around the bottom for soft spots!

Just a thought, but could it be because of the heavy genes? If the walls were very thick on top, could the weight alone be enough to cause it to gain a few inches in the circ. but not show much growth on the other two measurements?

The reason I ask is because I'm in a similar situation as Brooks. My 695 Handy gained 6 inches in circumference last week but only 2" for each of the other two measurements. So far this week, it has gained 3.5" in circ, 2" on the stem to blossom, and no measureable growth on the side to side. Is it possible to grow in only two directions? It's always been a very wide pumpkin and the blossom end has already made it's way down to the ground so maybe the shape is contributing to the weirdness?

All this talk about splits and soft spots got me paranoid LOL.
