I wonder how hot those pumpkins had been. Could be that a seed inside sprouted and took off!

I think I agree with Owen. Cut them babies open, I bet seeds are germinated inside.

they don't look rotten enough for a root to penetrate, though.
which brings up a question i have - has anyone else seen roots on the inside of leaf stalks when they cut them off?

I wonder if you could grow a pumpkin inside another pumpkin. It would be like those Russian nested dolls.

One of those photos looked like a root was going INTO the pumpkin from the ground.

These are cool pictures. I also believe that some seeds have germinated inside.
Now let's consider if Martin had left it laying on the ground. I wonder how long the seeds would grow & how much additional weight the fruit would gain. Then would a weigh-off official have to DQ the fruit because the root made a hole?

Those are my pumpkins. The oldest one was 41 days old so more than likely no seeds have germinated inside. The theory of a root having grown into the pumpkin is possible though. The pumpkins are pretty solid so I think it's unlikely. After halloween I'll dissect the area where the root is comming out and see what's going on.

Just saw the pictures in the photogallery which reminded me to followup on this thread. I examined these two pumpkins the first week in December and found no trace of any roots on the bottom of the pumpkins, not even a hole! I cut them open and made several cuts across the bottom looking for signs of root structure within the walls and found none. These must have been roots that grew up into the bottom of the pumpkin from some nearby weeds. I find this hard to believe since the fruit were sound and the walls were thick and firm, but, I can think of no other explanation.
