that's the first time i've ever seen or heard of a blossom end split that wasn't up and down.
anyone else? from what i've noticed, it's usually the sides pulling the weight down at the sides, and it rips up and down every time. this one is almost horizontal with the ground.

Last year when I blew one up the split was from aproximately 8 o'clock up over and around to 4 o'clock. the blossom end fell down hanging like a trap door, on a hinge.
For giggles I used silicon and stuck it back together. Two days later the bottom blew out and dropped the blossom end some distance, from the fruit. The distance may have had four footed intervention. Never a dull moment! :)))
A day or two later the coons moved, in for, a seed fest. Perhaps the second blow out was a coon out.

Both of my "bigger fruit" splits were verticle on the stem end this year. They were both fatal too. Last year we lost one to a horizontal split also on the stem end.

John Sorry to see your 1097 split on you. Hopefully you'll be able to hold your others together. Take care and good luck.

Thanks folks.....the calking is holding. I'll know by the weekend if its still growing or not. I know its not a super big one but i was hopping to get it weighed. This pumpkin had been growing very slowly for a while, about 3 lbs a day since the 15th of August. it was set on a small early secondary as the main burned out in the heat of early July. The whole plant was never very aggressive. Total plant area is about 400 sqft. I really don't think it had a chance to express its genetic potential!
