What are your opinions regarding the significance of the direction the mainvine runs. Do you think it matters at all? Is a south-running main preferrable? I'm planning my patch for next year, and was thinking of running them back-to-back, one north, and one south.

Run them in the direction you want them to go, to best fit your garden's dimensions.

The leaves will self orient, to the sun, no matter how you plant the seedling and run the vine.

I did my patch this year back to back north and south and didn't have any problems I liked doing it this was saved room in the patch I thought.

I was thinking about this too: so far all my best plants in different locations were growing east. A coincidence probably.

I started 5 plants this year...planned on opposing christmas tree patterns to maximize space. 3 plants started on south edge growing to the north. 2 started on north side growing to the south. The sun and heat burned up both of the north to south plants. All 3 south to north plants did fine. Just coincidence? Who knows? Certainly not I. Peace Wayne

This year I was going with 8 plants, 4 north-south and 4 south north. Every main vines tips want to grow in the east direction, so I ever had to fit them back, by using sticks, in the right direction I wish. Watching this, I would say north-west to south-east could be a usefull tracking.

My best plants have always been from northeast towards southwest and vice-versa back to back.
