Curious to know if pumpkins are weighed with the pallets underneath them and if so, how is the pallet weight subtracted from the fruit weight?

Do the pallets get weighted indivdually or is an "average" or "assumed" weight of the pallets merely subtracted from the fruit weight?

It sounds like there may be different rules for different sites. But, I think that GPC rules don't allow for pallets to be weighed with the pumpkin in order to record an official weight. However, I think they can be classified as UOW (unofficial weight).

Do I have that right folks?

No need to be confused. The rules state that the pumpkin alone goes onto the scale with no "stuff" sticking to it like cakes of mud or such. You are permitted only one inch of vine attached, to the stem.

There are non-registered sites and weigh offs that are not GPC. They may do as they please.

Only the pumpkin has been weighed at the weigh offs that I have been to.

GPC sites require "bare" pumpkin on scale
That doesn't mean other sites that carefully subtract the weight of the pallet are UOW, does it?
They just aren't enterable in GPC contest
I've been to both, and frankly the electronic scale with pre-weighed pallets set-up was sweet, thought not GPC worthy.
(Any averaging of pallets kind of of set-up, or accepting dirt, obviously should be UOW)

Pallets can vary in weight. To be the most accurate you would have to know the weight of each pallet used. At weighoffs this is impractical when there's lots of fruit and accurate weights are wanted.

I've seen weigh-offs where each pallet was pre-weighed and its weight recorded on it in permanent marker. . .another where it was weighed after . . .to a tenth lb. ,and subtracted.
Granted, its nice to see live the "bare" weight displayed on a big screen, but subtracting the weight of a tarp or pallet doesn't have to be "inaccurate"

GPC weigh-offs do not include pallets. The smaller entries might include the tarp so long as it's tare weight is known & subtracted. But the largest entries MUST sit on the scale alone to be officially eligable for top GPC standing & prizes.

Last year at Canby, we weighed all the 800 and below pumpkins on pallets. We set up a few pallets and weighted them to all weigh the same, and then subtracted that weight from all the pumpkins weighed with pallets. We did this so we didn't have to waste time at the scale sliding the pumpkins on and off, instead, we could be moving multiple pumpkins in the background getting them onto these pallets and not be bottled necked at the scale.
