The following is a recent press release on the Neguac event.
They're bigger and better than ever! Giant Pumpkin Festival organizer Camille Breau said this year, they expect to break last year's record winning pumpkin weight of 1,036 pounds. Breau said he has heard some good things among pumpkin enthusiasts this season leading him to believe that they could break last year'secord. "It's amazing how many people get interested in this," Breau said. Each year Breau sees new faces taking in the festival, either as competitors or spectators. Breau started growing giant pumpkins in the early 1990s and soon initiated the first official weigh-off in 1995 with three participants and 20 spectators. It eventually became an annual festival that now draws giant pumpkin growers from across New Brunswick to Neguac to show off their summer projects and make a bid for the winning prize. Last year, 1,200 spectators gathered to see the massive gourds and more are expected this year. Right now, the winner of the contest receives a $500 prize but Breau said they hope in time to increase that to $1,000. Any remaining funds from the festival will be donated to Le Club d'Age d'Or de Neguac (the Golden Age Club of Neguac). That money will be used to create activity programs for seniors. The annual Giant Pumpkin Festival takes place on Sept. 25 at the Neguac Sportplex. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and judging will start at 2 p.m. Kiosks and vendors will also be on site selling crafts and other goodies.
