Tonight there was some heavy rains by my place, and we haven't had rain in weeks. I got a 450 lbs that's mature and is ready for harvest but is still gaining weight. I was wondering if I should cut the end of the main when I get home tommorow to help the water flow not go all to the pumpkin and blow it out. Don't know if this is a solution, or works, or even matters, but it's worth a try, if my pumpkins still at risk. Thanks for the help!

As my ol' buddy Lincoln Mettler used to say, "If you ain't blowin' them up, you ain't trying hard enough!"

Stan ... geez I think maybe he doesn't want this one to blow! and is looking for information to that end? ... and I guess I ain't trying hard enough because I've never blown one...
Kyle - that's a tough question that answer is no one knows for sure. It could be just fine or it could blow. If you are more concerned about it splitting than gaining a few more lbs then you could cut the main at the stump. or you could try cutting 1/2 the main at the stump or 1/4 or 1/2 of the main right before the pumpkin. good luck with it !

If this were my pride and joy for the year's work I think I would cut the main off at the stump. If I had a serious stand, of good leaves, still working I would go, to the harvesting mood and cut the main just ahead, of the pumpkin, leaving only one or two secondary vines, to keep, it, in a living mode, for the remaining few days, to harvest time.

Kyle, take the risk and just let it grow. We have not had any decent rain here in BC either so I watered the entire patch for several hours and then fertilized the &*^% out of it the next day trying to get a measurable increase. Got a little bit of increase but no damage to the fruit.
In this case, I'd just go for it!!

I'm with Russ, I had a few days of awsome growth then these past 2 nights little to nothing as the nights have been COLD!! sunday is back into the 80's like Russ said. I'm leaving mine intack to see what happens, I currently have a few small skin cracks nothing deep maybe fingernail thickness this happened after we got a nice long day and night of warm rain ( 2 nights ago) should be interested to see what happens after a WARM sunday.
