I will take credit for the largest 838# pumpkin ever grown at 148# light to estimate. I am sooooooooo perplexed! Does anyone have an idea what could cause a 695 Handy seed to produce such a light pumpkin? I know it was hot and dry all summer but seemed to get plenty of water. It was 80% blue-gray-green and 20% salmon.I'll get a pic tonight and post it in my diary. I'm also remeasuring it. Don

Well, I'm not really qualified to answer since my 1038 Emmons plant produced a pumpkin 5% light when it was "supposed to" produce one 5% heavy, BUT . . . My theory is that I need more calcium (gypsum in soil) and more calcium baths AND I need to water my plants a bit more. Who has another idea?

Don, I will have to take credit for growing the biggest 869# squash then at 141# light. It measured 364 OTT and came in at a mere 869#. I took it to Parks Garden Ctr in Canfield to get an official weight Sept 9th, due to a pin hole in the blossom. Thinking that it should go over 1000# all there were a little perplexed also. I will post picture for you to compare. Heidi

Was there something unusual about the shapes of the light fruit? Some people think that certain shapes go heavy or light.

I treated my two pumpkins exactly the same this year. Lots of Calcium in the soil, and frequent Calcium baths. One went about 10% light, the other 5% heavy.

this yr was the first time i had a pumpkin go light it measured 870 but weighted 774 --but it was split & only 66 days old & still growing, not roted yet.& same genitics as pumpkin i grew last yr & went excact!!> it was in same spot in patch as 1 last yr that went 20% heavy-- go figure!! except if it keept growing it would have thickened up , I think !!

There was also a 1370 Rose pumpkin that was grown and weighed at Barnesville that went 100lbs light to the measurment.Just dont seem right for a rose to go light.

The 1370 Rose pumpkin had a great round shape with a beautiful orange to it. My 845(1097 Beachy x 1260 Weir) at barnesville went approx 37 lb light.Ill know exactly how much when i get it home and remeasure it on the skid.
mY 763 (842 EATON X 1260 wEIR) it went heavy at barnesville at approx 45 lbs.again ill know more when i get them remeasured on he skid.

Don My 842 Eaton last year was taping out at just under 1000#. I only needed it to go 20# heavy to make it. It's final weight was 839#. I nearly had a stroke. Al Eaton weighed his 842 at the same weigh off and it was 19% heavy and a new WR. I know how you feel. This year my only pumpkin left is the 842 and it's @ 930# now. If it goes that light again, I'll never plant that seed again.

Pumpkin flesh density is probably both genetic and cultural and figures into the wieght ALOT. So does depth of ribs, width(mass) of ribs, and location(shoulder vs blossom)of the bulk of the flesh. Also the flatness of the bottom. All these variables and the genetic tendencies towards wall thickness and internal fractures of the flesh are not accounted for in a volumetric measurement like OTT. A fruit withing 5% either way of the charts wieght is considered "to the chart". The chart gives you a % of fruit likely to be withing that 5% either way....it is a guide, not the Bible (actually, the Bible is a guide too but we wont get into that). What fun is a wieghoff if you know exactly what you have and grilled your friends as to exactly what they have??? Mine went light last year...a bummer no doubt....but a part of the wieghoff experience !

Brigitte I'll post a pic I got last eve on my diary of Perriman. The fruit had deep thick ribs, It was long and fairly wide, hard as a rock. Glenn, I was just thoroughly shocked it was so light. Brooks saw this pumpkin at the weigh-off, so did Nic. Heidi I'd like to see a pic of yours (869)and know how you and Copper feel. I had another fruit weigh 100# light and the other about 80# light. Oh well, bigger things to come! Thanks, Don Don Chambers
