....or not to thump, that is the question. Is there someone out there who can actually tell how a pumpkin will weigh based on sound alone? Just how reliable is this because I sure can't tell the difference.

The reason I ask is because I have two pumpkins with similar estimated weights, one on the 695 Handy and one on the 1016 Daletas. The 1016 Daletas has big shoulders while the 695 Handy has almost no shoulders. The 1016 is lightly cantaloped and has decent color while the skin of the 695 looks like concrete and is ugly as sin. The Handy definitely has the history of going heavy but the 1016's shoulders are making me question which on to take to Canby on the 1st. Which would you take? Would you trust your ear or trust the genes?

Brian, Nick Welty he can tell somehow, he walked up to my pumpkins and thumped on them and came pretty close to my weight before they where weighed.

Saddly, I believe most of the 1016 offspring tend to be on the light side. My hope is that my 1016 goes a bit heavy to make me reach 1000. Thumping aside, I believe it may be light.

The 1016 goes heavy!! Last year mine taped 940 and weight 997.5, and great looks also. I know what you mean by its big shoulders.

Thanks for the info guys, I appreciate it. Neither pumpkin is big by most standards so going heavy/light won't matter in the grand scheme of the weighoff but the science of thumping is definitely something I'd like to learn. Short of weighing them before hand, I'll just flip a coin I guess!

Ben, you'll have to enlighten me at Canby this year. I remember you thumping my 833 last year, saying that it would probably go light and you were right.

Best of luck everyone and I hope she goes heavy for both of us Russ!
