Peace, Wayne

Owensboro, Ky.

Second year grower with disappointing season but desire to do better and have questions about proper etiquette. Lately I have seen on seed exchange board a "warning" to not "piggy back" on seed requests. I think I know what that means but am curious if there are other rules of etiquette that I, as a nu-b would not be aware of. Peace Wayne

1. Never discuss politics, religion unless it is under the non related board( I don't think either of these belong on a pumpkin site any how"
2. Never blast a person on a message board over a seed trade or hear say until you have contacted that person 1st.
3. Always include a nice note with your Self addressed stamped bubble pack with who you are and what you are seeking.(Envelopes with know nice notes end up in the garbage)
4. Always have two 1st class postage stamps attached. Never send an unsolicated bubble pack.
5. This is a biggie... Do not give out growers addresses unless they give you permission
6. Always warn new growers that this is an addictive over compulsive hobby and will cause stress in a marriage. People will soon look at you funny
7. Never haul elephant poop in your caravan, when your family goes to the circus.
8. Remeber what it was like to be a 1st year grower
Feel free to add others

How about etiquette at a weigh-off?

I am going to Port Elgin for the first time this weekend. I went to a weigh-off last year in Niagara. But, this is my first time as a grower.

9.DONT ASK THE SAME QUESTION FROM TEN DIFFERENT PEOPLE JUST SO YOU CAN COMPARE ANSWERS

10.IF YOUR PUMPKIN IS TAPING MORE THAT THE GUYS THATS SUPPOSED TO BE TEACHING YOU "KEEP IT TO YOURSELF" OR THE INFORMATION HIGHWAY MIGHT START TO CRUMBLE

11.PIGGY BACK TO ME IS A GAME WE PLAYED AS KIDS BUT TO PUMPKIN GROWERS ITS SENDING DUPLICATE REQUEST TO THE SAME GROWER BUT AT DIFFERENT TIMES OF THE OFF SEASON * THIS IS VERY RARE IN OUR HOBBY

12. SOME OF THE PEOPLE WHO COULD HELP YOU THE MOST USUALLY JUST READ THE POSTS BUT NEVER ANSWER
SOOOOOOOOOO , BE THANKFUL TO THOSE THAT TRY AND HELP YOU

13.LAST BUT NOT LEAST, HAVE FUN AND DONT TAKE THE HOBBY TO SERIOUSLY

Bottom line....All AG growers at minimum are eccentric! Most suffer from paranoia and I've even seen a case or two of schizophrenia! Do keep that in mind when conversing on the web as well as in person.

As the old saying goes..."Most other growers are a bit 'touched' except me and you....and sometimes I get concerned about you!"

....and you don't even want to meet those suffering from

I think another thread recently touched on a another sensitive etiquette issue.

14) "Piggy Back" - If you see a seed request post & you like the looks of the cross, don't reply to that thread with a "ME TOO".

Stan obviously has the schizophrenia and is talking about his second person.

Steve, the "ME TOO" being a no-no is what made me start thinking about this topic. Thanks all for the replies...serious and humorous. Peace Wayne

Shannon, does not giving out addresses include e-mail addresses? I see requests all the time for contact info for other growers. Thanks, Peace Wayne

minor correction on #11 if you don't mind Pap...
This is called DOUBLE BUBBLE.

#11 - DOUBLE BUBBLE- DON'T SEND TWO REQUESTS TO THE SAME GROWER DURING A GIVEN YEAR, OR DON'T SEND TWO BUBBLE PACKS TO THE SAME GROWER ONE WITH YOUR ADDRESS AND ONE WITH A NON GROWING FRIEND OF YOURS.

#15 - When asking for seeds from some one you don't know ...don't just email them and say "can I have some of your seeds?" Instead you might want to introduce your self a little. State where you live. Say how long you have been growing. Say how you got obtained the persons email address or snail mail address. Say why you like/want his/her seeds- be specific. A little research, informed talk, civility and gratitude go a long ways !

#16 - Don't be mad is someone tells you "NO" Your not entitled to anything from anyone. Yes many people are willing and able to share ... other might not be able to for lots of different reasons. There are so many growers out there now- that not everyone is going to get a seed from this years hottest pumpkins.
