I am currently studing poetry for my Master's degree of English. I have an assignment for Monday to write a poem. Here is the result. It is written in the Renaissance style (about 1650) and has an iambic pentameter (10 syllables per line, stress on every other one.) I know they didn't have 1000 lbers back in 1650, but still.
If you think it is crummy, let me know before I hand it in!

Ode to a pumpkin
B.J. Wursten

Pumpkin, thou art the greatest of the fruits.
Thy countenance is brighter than the sun.
Thy strength is sucked up from thy woody roots.
Thy weight has far surpassed a half a ton.
Yet thy size is not thy only power,
As it might change from hour to hour.

It is the joy that thou canst bring to all
That in thy ban, a pleasant ban, do fall.

Thy growth takes a hundred and thirty days.
But it is not that that makes thee so great.
It is not the sun that on thy skin plays,
And neither is it thy treacherous fate.
For when summer wanes and the cold falls in
Thou wilt become a pie or soup so thin.

But it is the pleasure thou bringest all
When summer ends and slowly turns to fall.
