That question isn't that uncommon. When approached by people I meet in my travels who have never grown pumpkins, squash, cukes, ect...The one thing that is common is not knowing the difference between male & female flowers. They think all the blooms produce fruit, I'm guessing 85% of non gardeners I meet think this.
And the link Steve posted says it all.....

Very true, I believe that Kiwi is a very good example of a plant that requires a male plant and a female plant.

Every pumpkin plant has male flowers and female flowers. They don't necessarily appear at the same time. The female flowers have a small nob at the bottom that will turn into a pumpkin (actually it already is a pumpkin).
Take a look at www.pumpkinnook.com (how to grow giant pumpkins) for many, many pages on how to grow giant pumpkins.
Tremor gave you the link already, but there is a lot more at www.pumpkinnook.com. Read it all, print it out and digest it. If you then have any questions, this is the place to ask them.

Not to spark the whole "when does a blossom become a pumpkin" argument, but I dont think its really a pumpkin until its been pollinated.
Just messin Brad :)

An excelent way to have most, if not all, of the questions you could possibly ask answered are available by investing in the 3 Books written by Don Langavin. They are all available from several sourses just enter How To Grow World Class Giant Pumpkins into the site search facility and you will be taken to list of places you can purchase them from.
Enjoy Reading

I agree with Mike. Anyone new to this, get his second book. There's few outdated ideas, like the size of the plants, but it's an amazing resource. The third is great too. A little more advanced, but some great info and wonderful pictures.
Get the books and spend the winter reading them. There's loads of info!
