This year when i had baby pumpkins on my pumpkin vine they just shriveled up and died. They were never pollinated because they shriveled before i could. Any ideas on how i can prevent this next year. One though i had was to shade it but when i did that there was a large gap between the leaves and i didnt like that. Thanks Alec

Too much Nitro is at least a good possibility as to why. Was it a strong vining plant? Were the leaves a dark green. If so, Nitro. Thats my guess based on info, BF PS. Triple Phosphate should cure it.

being from a high heat, hot sun area my self, I have never had a pumpkin shrivel up from the heat before pollinating and I don't have my developing pumpkins covered. My guess is that it was something else besides the sun that did this. Good luck. Jimmy

BF is onto something with the nitro I think. How hot was it at that time? Maybe some simple cold packs like for the cooler surrounding the areas next year would help.

Upon further review(of your pictures) I would simply say that your plant is probably not healthy enough to support a fruit. When this happens, your plant is the first to know. By this I mean, it senses this and shuts down its reproductive mode(production of viable fruit) until it is healthy enough to support a fruit or two. BF PS. Heat like we get won't so much swivel the fruit prior to pollination as much as it will abort the fruit after pollination.
