P.S do most of you chop up and toss back into the patch for OM or into the compost for a while to break down?

Dave.....mix up a fungicide of your choice and spray the pumpkin immediately and lightly every day or so. Any clear water base acrylic or silicone such as an oven protecting spray will delay breakdown. Often there are very interesting facial expressions created as the fruit breaks down. Through the above delaying tactics, to death do us part, is from three, to four weeks depending, on the weather. The colder the better, for the pumpkin.

Cool is the key word. We carve em up each year and put them out front, but I keep them away from the front door so the bugs don't fly in the house whenever the door is open. Some years we will still have 2 weeks after Halloween. The best part for my sons is "Pumpkin Smashing Day" when we take them out to the garden for their final resting place.

It really depends on the fruit, wall thickness and density. The 718 van Kooten we carved, lasted over a month once it was carved but the 252 that we carved lasted only about 10 days till it turned to mush.
