yes iv stoped off road where theres huge eucalylpus trees & some spots under the new leaves is very rich layer of dark mulch ,, but also under old oak trees is same!!then theres the possability of gathering maple leaves, but that takes lots more work to end up with same amount after composting !! under euk trees theres also lots of centpeeds & spiders -- then the oaks have weird silvery bugs - maybe silver fish ,, are bugs good ? bad ?? my own patch is many yrs of oak falling & things grow good !! another question under pepper trees looks good but iv herd its not good ?? thanks anyone with your ideas !! ???-

Ive pondered the same idea as when walking threw old forests the ground is always soft and when dug into with a shovel it looks black and very rich, as its almost 100% OM from the leaves falling year after year, Ive also worried about the bugs thats why ive never brought the stuff home but I wouldnt mind tossing a load of it onto my patch in the spring and tilling it in.

all those bugs are there for a reason there making sure all those leaves and leaf litter get decomposed and all that good stuff its an mini ecosystem. spiders are there becasue theres food and if you move them they will set up shop in your patch if theres stuff for them to eat. As for the centapeeds there eating all those yummy leaves and they like the damp darkness of the leaves. As for collecting leaves as long as you dont go to deep into the pile you should be good im going to collect newly fallen leaves for my patch but then again dont take my advice im a newbie and its all about learning
