Why do some pumpkin seeds crack while drying?

i am not sure why, but don't let the cracks make you think the seeds are not viable;
some of the most proven seeds in the world have cracks in them...if the crack runs lengthwise WITH the length of the seed, you are fine! if it runs ACROSS the seed, well, i have never sprouted one of those. just be more careful with them. i think i have an Emmons that has that flaw...eric

I had the same problem on about half of my seeds. This being my first year, I didn't know if it was a bad thing or not, so I put them in a seperate envelope incase I needed them later. Good to hear that it is not a bad thing, thanks.

My seeds have been drying under a fan at room temp being turned daily since Sunday and Most have hairline cracks in the shell, Lots of my seeds last year which I planted were cracked

Cracks are good. They let water in at germination time. Some brown/tan seed shells are just too hard to resist cracking as the seed dries.

Thanks everyone for your answers.

Tremor I was wondering about those brown/tan seeds. I had one pumpkin whose seeds were brown and 50% of the seeds are cracked. I'll look at them different from now on thanks!
