I have received a few seed requests from folks with no note, just a bubble. Growers are more than willing to help you out with free seeds, but please send a little note along with your bubble. Relationships can go a long ways in this hobby and it all starts with a note. John

Very good point. I hate when I get a bubble in the mail and that is it. To be honest those are the last ones to be filled and are more likely to get fewer seeds than those with a quick little note attached.

no note....gets filed in trash can.(ok, so I really send a note saying that I had no idea what you were interested in so I sent nothing....or, I just steal and re-use the stamps.....)

Always send a little note thanking the grower and possibly telling them what your plans are for the upcoming growing season. It's only polite.

John,
If you offered the seeds on BP.com and gave the mailing address then I would think you would get a lot of mailers with no note, a lot of seed collecting waiting for the next hot seed.
or you can ask for a 5 spot note
Just my opinion

Whether a grower has offered seed up on BP or elsewhere...or...a request is sent without prior contact, a note included with the bubble is simply proper seed swapping etiquette.
I myself always send a personalized note to whoever I am requesting from, including congratulations on whatever their biggest was this past year and info on how I did this year and my plans for next year. A little communication goes a long way toward how thick your bubble is when it comes back to you.

Orange One I am not asking for a thank you or any money. Regardless of where a new or experienced grower sees seeds for free, it should be a common practice to send a note along with your bubble. As I said networking even for free seeds is what gets a grower the best possible results for the least possible monies. Its about making good relationships for future transactions. John

John, you are correct, it is a common courtesy. I sent a bubble (and I asked first) to Mr. Frantz who has seeds that I am interested in. I simply explained who I was, why I was requesting his seeds and some background. Simple and easy.

John,
I do not disagree with what you are saying .

I gave out seeds regardless because the whole point of free seeds is to have more people interested.

I REALIZE THAT I MAY BE "TAKEN TO TASK" FOR MY POST BUT, TO BE VERY HONEST WITH YOU FOLKS I DONT BLAME THE SENDERS OF NOTELESS BUBBLE PACKS, I BLAME ( IN MOST CASES ) THEIR PARENTS OR PARENT, OR THE WAY THEY WERE BROUGHT UP.

ITS NOT UNCOMMON TO SEE A GENERAL LACK OF COURTESY JUST ABOUT EVERYWHERE TODAY. A LOT OF KIDS AND YOUNG ADULTS WERE NEVER TAUGHT COMMON COURTESY ,AND SO THEY DONT SHOW ANY.
A LOT OF THEM GREW UP SPENDING A GOOD PORTION OF THEIR TIME IN SOMEONE ELSES CARE ),RATHER THAN A PARENT OR GRANDPARENT.( CHALK THIS UP TO YEARS OF INFLATION AND A HIGH COST OF LIVING )

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME A CLERK AT THE LOCAL MINI-MART SAID "THANK YOU", OR SOMEONE HELD THE DOOR FOR YOU RATHER THAN LETTING IT SLAM INTO YOUR FACE? ( HOW BOUT THAT MIDDLE FINGER FROM JUST ABOUT EVERYWHERE IF YOU GET INTO THE WRONG LANE ? OR STOP TO LET ANOTHER DRIVER ONTO THE ROAD IN FRONT OF YOU ? )

DONT FORGET THAT NONVERBAL RESPONSE WHEN YOU PICK UP YOUR ORDER AT THE DRIVE THROUGH.

I DONT MEAN TO GET ALL POLITICAL AND FATHERLY CAUSE I TO FORGET MY MANNERS FROM TIME TO TIME. ( A PRODUCT OF MY SINGLE PARENT UPBRINGING SIXTY FOUR YEARS AGO LOL )--- I WAS A TRENDSETTER AND DID NOT EVEN KNOW IT.
BUT ITS TRUE THAT MANNERS IN GENERAL HAVE SLIPPED GREATLY OVER THE YEARS. JUST BE THANKFUL FOR SEED REQUESTERS WITH MANNERS AND CHALK THE OTHERS UP TO SOCIETY

Against my better judgement, I stopped at a popular McDrivethrough for my sons dinner the other night. The girl handed me my bags & as she was doing so I said "Thank you."

She replied "You're welcome."

She probably thought that she was being polite too.

would "no problem" really be an incorrect response? I'm so used to hearing nothing in return that I'll settle for almost anything these days, even "yep" or "sure".

As for other twenty-somethings my age, I have to agree that most ladies don't act like ladies and most guys tend to be jerks when it comes to manners.

To everyone here, thank you for being my friends and those who I have contacted, thanks for your seeds. You all should have had a nice note inside the bubble unless I screwed up. -Jim

In this region, a common reply to thank you is " you betcha".
A Norwegian/Scandanavian thing I think.

Dick I can agree about the driving part, but as for holding open the door or a clerk saying thank you or saying good luck when you buy a lottery ticket, it is common up here in NH.

Think about how it might be three generations from now based on the changes some of us have seen in essentially one generation. Scary.............but then again, I don't believe in reincarnation.

My parents taught me to hold doors, say please and thank you and make sure all gifts and cards are answered with a thank you note or phone call. This is also what my children have been taught and I'm proud to say, they do all very well.

Pap, no need to YELL! Most folks in the pumpkin business have lots of manners and stuff, still we have gotten bubble packs with no note filled them and have seen the very same seeds traded away like playing cards... I say that if you ask for seeds (or any freebee) then you best say PLEASE and THANK YOU. If no note or a promise of growing the requested seeds then no responce and thanks for the stamps (LOL @ U LIpumpkin!). Oh and I don't expect any common courtesy from minimum wage employee folks I know how it is to be in those shoes too!

I have just had a very nice communication with a seventeen year old who grew a fifty pound winner this summer. It was pleasing, to get, an honest E asking, for seed and passing a compliment, to me.

I think this is what some, of you feel is missing, in today's society.

You would be surprised how many adult communications get ignored, by some very well educated persons. I just hate it when ignored is the response I get. I assume crude up bringings and total lack, of cooth. Sometimes I think it has to do, with a sincere unwillingness, to accept personal responsibilty. These comments are not referenced, to young folks at all. In fact that baloney is more and more noticed, in my peers. Golly that suggests a five or six generation errosion, of common courtesy and personal responsibility.

It started anywhere, anytime and right now. Our local school teachers are not permitted, to correct papers, with a red pencil. That is now professional bashing via harsh red grading. Lordy Lordy what next?

To defend Dick, He always types in capitals, Look at all his posts. I don't think He is yelling, I think He doesn't know how to use his keyboard. Or maybe he can't hear himself typing. :)

Normally, when I ask seeds I put in the bubble, a copy of the e-mail that I sent to the grower, and so him can to remember me,naturally ever:(PLEASE AND THANK), this is the
right thing to do. (sorry for english)
