Why don't all pumpkin flowers have a Fibonacci number of lobes? 1,1,3,5,8, 13 is the start of the series. This number is found throughout nature, for example, bananas always have three segments (lobes), and the number of sections in a persimmon cut crosswise is a Fibonacci number, and the spirals in a pine cone and in sunflowers are fibonacci numbers. So where do the four-lobe and six lobe flowers come from? http://britton.disted.camosun.bc.ca/fibslide/jbfibslide.htm http://www.popmath.org.uk/rpamaths/rpampages/sunflower.html
Wintertime (also known as the silly season) is definitely here

I mislisted the series -- 2 is a Fibonacci number

Fine then, my gandfather had two thumbs (Fibonacci), and a set of 4 fingers (not Fibonacci), and a set of 2 and 3/4 fingers and one that didn't work all the way (Fingernotchy). LOL! Don't even ask about his twin! AleX Noel.

Fibonacci is a number series, derived from adding the previous two numbers together. I don't understand how they get from zero to one and from there to two, but after that it's straighforward. Check out the two web sites in the first post, it explains it much better than I can. The point for this discussion is that flower parts, including the lobes of the ovaries, almost invariably are a fibonacci number, and for some reason that I don't understand, pumpkins have a significant number of four and six-lobed flowers. Again, look at the web sites, which have lots of great illustrations.
