I've had a few emails this morning, so rather than answering each one I'll do a general Post. The Phyto's are needed to have, seeds, plant, etc cross the Border into the U.S. from any and every destination in the world. There are other country's that require this also. The reason for the Pyto is to stop the transmission of plant and fungal diseases from entering the U.S. To get a Pyto you need to take the seeds that are to be sent, I do all my bubble packs up and all the seed envelopes are stapled, I then present the bubbles to the Canada Food Inspection Agency. Every major city has a branch, they are a division of our Federal Government. You can find a phone number in the Blue Pages. You may need to book a time to have the inspection done, I do this so I can be present at the inspection process, and also to insure the seeds are put back into the same envelopes they were taken out of. Although the inspectors are very diligent to make sure everything is back in their original envelopes. The inspectors do a random inspection, I would guess, about 25% of the seeds are checked. the largest bunch I had inspected was 75 bubbles in one inspection process, this took about 45 minutes. Once the seeds are inspected the inspector mey require you to seal the Box with all the Bubbles in it. I generally do this at home, as they have come to know me. Once this is acheived and I am packaging up the box, I put the pyto certificate on the top of the bubbles in the box along with a letter. cont.

that Says " Please ensure all seeds are pit back into their original packages as these are competition Giant pumpkin seeds. Thank you for your time This is for the customs inspector at the border, and a small safe gaurd to ensure no mix ups. Now the box with the Bubbles, I make arrangements for someone on the U.S. side to receive the box, If you did each bubble seperately it would cost $12.00 for each bubble, instead of doing a box full for $12.00 Once I have sealed the box, I write on the outside, Phyto certificate enclosed, as this is a requirement. And so far no problems. Once the box of bubbles gets to the destination, I have included some money for postage as each of the bubbles will need to be stamped and mailed. So I know I have said some of this before, i thought I would do a general all points breakdown of the process. As I also Said, If you wish, I can do this for you, just send me an email. If there are any questions, let's do it on this board for everyone to see. Eddy

One more thing This is the procedure I do for a phyto in Canada, I would believe, a Phyto from a diferent country would be quite similar, as a Phyto Certificate is based on world Agriculture practices. They are generated by your federal Gov't and not state, provincal, municipal gov'ts

Well, I finally found the office that handles issuing of phyto certs in my area of Germany. This is what it will cost:
21 Euros per started half hour of driving time, and time needed to check the seeds. They are about 90 minutes drive from me. 23 Euro Cents for each kilometer driven. 6 Euros for each certificate issued.
Note 1 US Dollar buys about 80 Euro Cents. I asked if I could bring the seeds to them to save money, and they told me that they would combine their visit to me with other duties so that the cost would be shared by others.
So lets say I get charged for 90 minutes of work(full cost would be at least 3 hours driving time alone back and forth), plus 100 kilometers(double this for back and forth), plus 2 certificates. That equals about 160 Euros or $200.
Phyto Certs are pretty expensive here.

Wayne, if I get into a bind I will ask Eddy for help for sure, but it would sure be nice if I could just do it safely and legally myself. I called the inspector and talked with him directly. He told me that the costs for driving time would actually be very small as he would already be in my area taking care of other business. He understood my situation and so I am going to give it a shot. We will see how much it will cost.
Once I get this setup, I will ask for all that received an empty bubble from me to send me their address. More to come.
G, nothing set yet, but I am working on a plan to be in North America sometime around 4-5 March.
