I had lock problems(winxp). I downloaded spybot and some protection programs from gibson research(grc.com). Those programs,"high" cookie privacy, disc clean up,and defraggin, and lock up has not happened.

McPumpkin as a data consultant I have to recommend that you remove spybot and install something a bit less resource intense, run adaware. I've seen spybot do more bad then good. Just a heads up. Tom

Adaware has been working well for us here. Don't know about the other.

spybot works well, but as bohica has said, you gotta have the resources to run it.

Adaware is good stuff.
I'd also recommend, of all things, Evidence Eliminator. This clears up many of the temp files which clog your PC's arteries like bacon grease, it's not just Windows and IE which have temp files, everything from Media Players, Games, Instant Messengers and just about every other program out there. Evidence Eliminator was created to remove all of these things. This software isn't targeted at spyware, instead it's targeting all the junk your trusted applications generate. This works wonders for speeding up your machine.

Delete ALL the files under CONTENT.IE5. Internet explorer will recreated them. If you can't delete the files, boot into safe mode and try again. I would keep spybot, run adaware, adawareaway, trendmicro antispyware and ewido. They all find different things. No one program will remove ALL the spyware from your pc.

I need to amend a couple things. Delete the alphanumeric folders under contentie.5, IE will recreate them. To do a more thourough job of this, you should log in with the Administrator account as if you try to delete those folder when logged on as yourself they are not visible (even if you try to make them visible). Another good clean up program is cleanup4 or CCleaner, both are free.

Also be careful of installing too many spyware removal programs or the wrong one... some spyware removal programs are spyware themselves... Research them before installation, the ones mentioned here so far all have good reputations.

If you call AOL here you get an call center in India I wouldnt have AOL for anythingsome people consider aol's software to be spyware also. Cleanup from steven gould is great! spybot adaware and counterspy are all great the microsoft antispyware is ok but they are a bit wishywashy on some items I would consider spyware all of the above programs are free be carefull when searching for them because some unscrupulous people try to trick you into thinking you are getting the free ones but you end up with one they want you to pay for!

I have to agree with Peter (Fulla) about the great Customer Service we get from the AOL Members Helpline over here, although i only call them if it is an issue with connectability or Billing issues which i have non of for almost 2 years.

Anyone using AOL should do thereselves a favor and uninstall it. Then purchase your internet service from a local provider in your state. You will be able to talk to someone without waiting for too long and you will also very likely not have to use a third party software like AOl's, MSN or PEOPLE PC. It's like Dennis Miller says, they all connect to the same internet, but how difficult do you want to make it?

The funny thing is once AOL gets a new computer user they have most of them "locked in" I have heard from numerous people "how would i get e-mail if i don't have AOL" they don't even know that their computers come with everything they need to get e-mail and the internet except the connection. Then when people move onto broadband connections AOL still tries (very underhandedly) to keep them as customers by telling them they need all their security crap, even when people tell AOL "no more" they will keep billing them for months and if the bills aren't paid they turn them into collection agencies. AOL is the most corrupt dishonest company I have ever had to deal with.

I downloaded the newest version of AOL IM, and let me tell you - they're getting very creative. I'm pretty sure it's the whole AOL package you actually download, and it takes some doing to get it off, and the settings for IM tweaked just right.
google "Old Version" if you need just the stripped down basic stuff like the good ol days, lol.

Going by the above, i think we must have a different AOL over here to that of its Mother Country, and maybe others too. I am quite happy with using AOL Email. I have several internet security packages and Firewall's running on here that are not AOL's own internet security package and it still allows me to run them with no conflict with their own. A non AOL spam catcher gets the AOL spam, as well as all other spam and even allows me to delete AOL's own spam from the folders.
I guess i just do not demand a great deal from my Computer and quite content as it is. However, i always use IE as the Browser to Log into BP.com instead of directly from the AOL Browser. It is always very interesting to read other peoples oppinions on such things as Computers and the many problems they have with differing aspects of them.
Andy As i have the whole AOL Subscription etc etc i do not know how the IM on it's own actually works with other ISP's. I know a few people with just the AOL IM but never really asked them about it. Do you have to Subscribe to it or does it come for free ? Just interested to hear about it.

you don't need an AOL subscription to use IM. I think all you need to do is go to their website and create a unique username and password, then download the IM software. at least that's how it was when i did it about 8 years ago. it's a stand alone program that doesn't need the AOL platform (or whatever you want to call it) to work.
if for some reason you were to drop AOL as your provider, you could just log into IM with your old username and password i would think.

There is nothing worse then calling the computer company about a problem you are trying to fix and you get someone that speaks broken English every time!!! Its just makes matters that much worse!!! LOLOLOLOL. The phone company is the same way. I would think that hiring someone who speaks loud and clear that customers can understand would be very important for the phone company and top prioity. I just reinstalled windows a couple days ago and had to call Microsoft to re enter new numbers for Windows, I could not for the life of me understand what the tech was saying, and when i asked her to slow down and talk slower it just made it worse, lol. I hated to be rude but I asked her if i could speak to someone eles. Now that is irritating!!!

Steve brings up a good point. Why use any internet providers webmail when Outlook works so well? I really think that a lot of computer users don't know it's installed on their machines & FAR SUPERIOR to any webmail type service.
What's up with that?

Brooks You are spot on with what you are saying about not being able to understand someone attempting to speak in broken English. I recently needed a telephone number that was not in our local directory therefor i called directory enquiries. The person on the other end of the telephone could not even pronounce the name of the person i was trying to obtain the number for. After 2 or 3 minutes of spelling the name and address of the person i needed the number for i eventually got the number i needed. I immediately called the telephone service provider to complain about the problem i had just experienced and guess what.......I couldn't understand a word they were saying !!!!!!.
