Who all out there believe and use the no till method to grow their pumpkins? Who doesn't? Thanks Scott.

I'm not sure if it's the same or not... I plow. That is, there
is no rotating tines, I essentially "harrow" the soil. I think if you feed the soil, the worms are going to be there. At
least that's what I'm trying to do.

In the agricultural sense ploughing and harrowing are forms of tillage.

I till in the fall and in the spring. Now that I am growing a cover crop ahead of the plants, I'll be tilling during the summer too.

I would only till in amendments in the fall but for a neighbors tree. Tilling breaks the roots. Then they grow back in 4-6 weeks anyway.

Clay soil...fall plow, spring cultivate, minimum use of rotary tiller!

I till in the fall to incorporate organic matter into my garden. I till very lightly in the spring just to upset the weeds. Last year I did not till in the spring and I thought everything went okay. You still have to build pumpkin mounds in the spring, at least I do, and this upsets the soil a little. If you are adding organic matter to your garden each year there is no way I know of to incorporate it other than tilling.

I turn over the soil in the fall with a pitch fork. No tilling. Break the clumps up in the spring with a steel rake. I have 3000 sq. ft.
In my old patch I let the plant stay until spring. Pulled off what was left and raked the rest with a steel rake and planted (except for the bed the seedling was planted into).

I till the planting mounds with a fork to build them up and add compost and fertilizer. I might make one mid-summer shallow cultivation with tiller when soil is hot and dry for weed control. I try not to hurt my worms.
