We have quite a few warm days this winter. I was wondering if this is beneficial to the garden during the winter season. Can a warm stretch then a few cold days then more warm then a few cold days harm the garden in some way? Could all the micros in the garden survive the change in weather so many times? Something unrelated, the right side tie rod end on my son's atv broke today. I am happy that he was parking it when it broke and not miles away.

The temps shouldn't hurt the pumpkin garden. I was hoping for some good deep frost to break up come compaction without tillage. So far no frost in the ground here. In a normal winter we are worried about buried pipes freezing up. Our January thaw started before Christmas and will probably carry on into February. The weather can be hard on trees and shrubs. If they break dormancy and it then turns real cold it can be hard on them.

Sounds like someone was looking our for your son. Good thing it didn't break at high speed and cause an accident.

on the east coast this has been a very mild winter compaired to any we have had over several years.
i have yet to use the snow blower more than once.
the soil expansion and contraction of thaw/freeze i think is good for the soil. a natural airation process for us pumpkin growers.
it does raise hell with perenials as iowegian mentioned above.

the lack of snow has left the winter rye exposed and the patch has more deer tracks then ever and they have torn it out from the roots...can't win!
