Is there anyone on here who knows how to do this, or can guide a beginner through it? I have been looking online for a "how to" site, but nothing comes up. These big pumpkins seem to deserve something better than a standard Jack o Lantern appearance. Maybe one anyway.

I do some of that. Not entirely, just to add semi-features to a carved face. It can be done with a chisel and mallot, I use a small looped metal tool that has a sharp side and slowly shave away. AleX Noel.

I was VERY impressed with what Crammed(Marc) did with his carving last year. Very cool!

extremepumpkins.com has a lot of great carving ideas. Some get pretty wierd and even dangerous. You have to see the site to know what I'm talking about.

I learned by watching Pat and also Tim Bailey.
you need a good 3-d imagination. if you've ever done clay sculpture (or wood or ice), you've got a great head start. you also need to be fully aware of the internal cracks, and how to work around them. Once you get the hang of it, it's not as tough as it looks, but it does take a looooong time to finish one.
