Now that the 1000 lb barrier has been blown away this year a few times with true green squash, I was wondering if perhaps the Niagara, or GPC folks should consider a new category for recognition. I was considering the combined weight of a growers heaviest, officially weighed true greenie and pumpkin, that both weighed over 1000 each.
This year Todd Swarts has a 1199 pumpkin and a 1018 true greenie, that comes to 2217 pounds. Bob MacKenzie had a 1104.5 pumpkin and a 1063.5 true greenie, that comes to 2168 pounds.
Not sure what to call the title, or if is even a good idea, but, one thing is for sure, these guys are the only ones to ever have done this, and they both did it this year.

Please edit the above last two words to read "last year".

not a bad idea . im sure should more growers start growing greenies and pumpkins together then the gpc would need to give it strong consideration. at this point how many growers do we have that would fit into this catagory? pap

Owen That sounds like a good idea. Can I put my order in for next year? If so put me down for a 1200 lb pumpkin and a 1100 lb squash. Now that would make my season! As far as a name goes, how about DOUBLE THREAT...Todd

The Monster Double and the Double Threat are both good names.
I was thinking that the winner could get a green jacket with orange pin stripes, maybe call it the Greenge Jacket.
Dick, I think that there are a lot of growers that grow both, and now that Bob and Todd have finally broken the 1000 pound barrier, we will start seeing even more, and the weights will certainly continue to go up.
Another idea would be the most beautiful true greenie, if I am not wrong then there already is such a category for pumpkins.
just some ideas, the winter has been long, and I am starting to get that spring fever feeling...LOL

Owen, I think you typed the answer when you asked the question. pumpkin/squash combined... ie ... the combined champion.

Why the 1000 pound threshold? If somebody grew a 2000 pound squash and a 600 pound pumpkin why shouldn't they be eligible? That's what I plan on growing this year :-)

Hmmmmmm.....a Double Trouble program....This could be a very cool idea. It should increase the green entries as Owen suggests.

How about an Orange & Green Tartan style Waistcoat or Jacket, i might take a look at the Scottish Clan tartan's and see if one exists already.

How about we have a pumpkin biathlon? You grow a pumpkin, shoot a target, grow a squash, shoot a target. If you miss targets, you get penalty weight subtracted or you have to grow a penalty long gourd.
Sorry, watched too much olympic coverage.
