Hi I am a new pumpkin grower in the uk. I am hoping for advice on sowing dates, germinating in a propogator and planting in a small hoop house, 6 to 10 days later. I know I have a near neighbour on these pages, Liverpool. I am on the welsh side of Chester. Many thanks Great site John

I'd say around the last weekend in April. That's just general though. AleX Noel.

Welcome John. I'm in the Netherlands but our climates are relatively similar. I plant the last week in April (23rd this year) and will set them outside in a small hoop house around May 6. I plant them in peat pots (soil at about 25 Celsius) after filing the seeds and soaking them for about 4 hours. I don't have a propagator but they have always germinated close to the heater within a week.

Thank you for the replies everyone, hope to go with that date the 23 suggested by Dutch Brad and have a second sowing as put forward by Fulla. My aim is for a personal best ,not a lot to beat, last year I grew 4x100lb pumpkins on two plants from saved open pollinated seed which turned out to be crossed with what we in the uk call a courgette [a small early harvesting marrow ] lovely attractive green and yellow stripey fruits but hope to do better this year with better seeds , personal application and knowledge and guidance from this site many thanks John

Hi,thanks for the welcome Mark. In reply to Brad ,I have been lucky to find SCZMCZYK on EBAY saw the location was Canby Oregon [knew it was pumpkin country] and when I purchased it was Brett Hester giving unconnected growers the opportunity to have pumpkin and squash seeds saved from his competition patch. Seeds arrived promptly with encouraging words and email address should I have problems in the growing season [Great Ebayer and a gentleman]. Thank you for asking Brad regards John.
