Record dry March in the East. Record wet March in the West. Climatologists are blaming La Nina, a pattern of abnormally cool waters that prevails now in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean - the flip side of El Nino.

One of these conditions is thought to benefit us. Which is it? Tom B?

I live in the west. I live on the "Left Coast" and I can tell you we are all tired of the water this March. Sierra's are closing in on 600" of snow and we are all bracing for 5-6" storm starting Mon-Wed with no relief in sight, 5-6"rain=5-6' of snow in the Mountains. I have a friend who lives on the Hawaian Islands he tells me they had 30" in a 24hr period and received 140" in March alone! When will it stop! Wet in SLO Ca.

If I remember right 'el nino' is what give TN record precipitation, good temps, ect.... And we tend to get three cuttings of hay during those years.... 'la nina' we usually get drought - like last year.

It just dripped here a tiny bit for the first time in weeks and weeks. It is so dry that burning is banned state wide! That never happens here in the spring. Figures I pick this year to clear lots of accumulated brush, and now can't burn it! What does La Nina mean for here? AleX Noel.

I was referring to Tom's theory about how En Nino may have influenced AG records.

Well, I guess if it's gonna rain it might as well be big time, just like growing AG's. Bigger is better! Good thing for me my patches have some slope and drain real well. Give me your best shot La Nina! Bring it! I'm about about to invest in a Kevin Costner Waterwold sail boat if this keeps up much longer! And instead of growing tomatoes I will grow AG's. lol

Hey Steve, That was a few years ago! I had mentioned that the regional weather is affected by El Nino, and La Nina, thus our pumpkin seasons should be similar to either one or the other.
I see the last La Nina Cycle was June 1998-March 2001, This entails the 1998, 1999, and 2000 seasons where we saw the majority of the big ones come out of the east coast, Ontario, and the Midwest. This news bodes well for me.
Lots has changed since then.

I take back what I said about La Nina. Uncle, I give up Mother Nature, spare me! This is getting to be ridiculous!

I think this photo in vineman's diary says it all about what la nina has done to many of us in California/Bay Area/Wine Country.

How long? Well the NOAA just came out on the April 6th and said it has intensified and it will last 1-3 months more. If it keeps this pattern and the Jet Stream keeps hitting California it's going to be real wet. Right now this week is going to be make or break in my opinion. If Tues storm gives us a lot of rain, better hope you are not near a levee or land/mudslide.
