What is the biggest pumpkin you have grown or have heard of being grown in soil that WAS NOT tested and with NO amendments added like old manure and compost ect..
And , the Only thing you or they did was till and plant and only added the amendments like Agro-K products,or whatever eles you might use only after the plant was in the ground and growing.
I think Tom Beachy has grown a few monster's this way a few times.

Brooks,

In 2004, I put four plants in an old pasture next to my main patch. These were plants that I had germinated to test my new germination set-up, and couldn't just throw in the compost pile. I just tilled the area and threww them in. Results: 505, 518 and 1028.5!

Many years ago I grew a 100# Big Max with absolutely no fertilizer, pesticides, or watering. Just planted the seed, hoed the weeds a couple of times and let it go. My garden is so big that now I limit my amendments to just the planting mound and the area where the main vine will grow. I do broadcast a little 10-10-10 over everything.
In 2004 I got a 633.5 and a 449 on the same plant. Last year we had a 800+ and a 700+ that went bad a week before weighoff. We had another plnat that we let go wild, and it put out 12 pumpkins that averaged over 200# each. I have not done a soil test. Since things seem to grow good, I just try to keep a good planting mound for early growth, and add what the plant needs for each growing season.

I would have to say that some gowers are just trying to hard to get the big one. Although i would have to look at what they are doing for fertilizing and what there soil is like. mine is already pretty good so it just may seem that other people are trying to hard compared to me. All i can say is get your soil right and do what you think is reight for your growinf area.

I don't think Andy Wolfe had much patch prep last year. I could be wrong though.

brand new patch, but i brought in a bunch of manure, and even some of the soil from my old patch. I did grow some "no-care" plants last year - out in the corn field, double planted with only a wheelbarrow full of horse manure per site. had a bunch 200-370 pounds.

Good question Brooks. My biggest with no care is 438,
others at 429, 410, 305.5 squash, 186.5, 278.5, 249,183 & 125. They're really the most fun. I'm going no-care this year with some good crosses..next year, bar the door.LOL Don
