What are the benifits of making mounds for the pumpkin to grow on and the "down" side of not mounding? I have tried both and found that it has made no difference is pumpkin size.

I would think mounding would make artificial watering of the plant a little more difficult, as the water would tend to run down the mound. Drip watering may be a good watering system on a mound.

It's good for starting plants and keeping plants dry if you have water issues, to much rain etc. And as Doug said it works real well with drip sytems if you have a 1 gallon plastic container for example in the middle. When plants get big though it can cause some stress on stump if drop off is to steep. And if you use a container you have less space for roots. Otherwise in my opinion it's a toss up which way to go.

hi gene, the benefits are warming the soil and drainage. in Calif. warming the soil probably isn't going to be a issue for you but with all the rain you've been getting this year you might want to consider it just to keep their feet a little dryer. if your soil is on the porous side and warm probably doesn't matter.

We allways build a "low rise mound" that is the entire patch is raise from the perimiter grade to about 12" in the center, it seems to help warm the soil as well as allowing the addition of compost and manure like a raised bed. Never had a problem with irrigation erosion or main vine stress as were talkin about a 700 square foot radius.
