I got my 1233.5 Reiss seeds. Unfortunately, the US Mail system crushed one of them! Ouch!!

That seed still looks good to me. It looks like the tip is ok still, if that is the tip I am seeing in the photo.

No, it's the "important" tip that is damaged, and in fact it's really smashed. The guts of that end, the radical (?) are really crushed to little bits inside the plastic envelope.

I don't think all the king's horses and all the kings men could put that pumpkin seed together again...

Both of the 1233's I recieved are damaged also. One is smashed to smitherines (wherever the heck THAT is) the other is cracked clear across....but may still be good. The bubbles in the bubblepack had no air in them at all for about 50% of the bubble......go figure.......G

i would take another look at that seed; it LOOKS to me that the radicle tip is still intact, regardless of the condidion of the seed shell itself. see "new spin on seed starting" in the seed starting board area; this would be exactly how a seed looks before i put it in the CD spindle germ-inatron. i myself also received one excellent one and one damaged one, whereby i had to autopsy the bad one by removing the entire seed coat because i found a nice crack in the 'shoulder' of the seed, right where you least want one. upon extreme examination, i am the proud owner of ONE excellent 1233.5 seed, and one excellent 1233.5 GERM-ONLY. perhaps that is where the term, lol, GERM(any) came from, lol......

Cliff, if that picture properly represents what is really there, that seed is good. If you're growing a 1233 this year, start that one before the other. If it grows, you know you have another for later, if not, you start the intact one. Just be careful with that tip. THE SEED IS STILL GOOD! AleX Noel.

No, no, the radical tip is crushed. Looking at the photo again, it might look like it's the rounded end... there is a little bit of illusion with the clear plastic going on there, but look at the pieces that broke off. It's the radicle end.
With the other reports of damage here, maybe the impact came before it got to Mike!

I guess the delivery man was jelouse because he didn't get a 1233.5 Reiss and he threw your seeds on the ground and stomped on them until your seeds were squarshed LOL! I'm just trying to make you feel better about your loss by throwing in a little humor. I hope your other seed sprouts,Cliff. I also hope you grow a 1000 pounder this year. Good luck.

I see what you're saying Cliff, but it will grow. I wasn't arguing that it was the rounded end, I saw it was the pointed end. The only part that is broken though, is the seed's shell. The inside is the part that grows, you could peel off the entire shell if you wanted. The tip of the actual living part is INTACT, it's that little pointy thing coming out of the broken end. You got very lucky. Try it, if the seed is healthy, it will grow. If you truly just don't believe it, send it my way, don't destroy it. I'm not trying to argue stupidly, trying to help you out. AleX.

That's a bummer. The photo doesn't clearly indicate if the radical is damaged or not. If it is intact, the seed will grow.
I had this happen twice in the past. Each time it has been a seed in a plastic bag crossing the national borders. Perhaps plastic isn't the best packaging for seeds going international. I think something in the sorting equipment is different with our domestic mail handling.

Maybe it will grow, maybe not. But I would try. What can it hurt?

You can't tell from the picture, but the radicle is truly broken off and separated from the rest of the inner seed. The radicle is separated and crushed into smaller bits throughout the bag. I appreciate the concern. But I'd be "ahead" by roasting the remains of this seed and nourishing myself that way. (No, I won't really do that.)
I hope not too many others of us have this same problem!

There is a jagged edge in the picture, but it's the edge of the broken seed, the part that would be the leaf......
