I've been contacted by a few people who are going to try growing for first time. Bp is a great site, but can be a bit much for a beginner. What are some good links that cover the basics?

Overwhelming would be a understatement. I've caught myself referring to my girls Eaton & Bobier.
It's a great site, and the information is priceless. These folks are the best. Tell your friend to come on.
