I think watering is my biggest problem. I have used soaker hoses, Sprinkler's and straight water hose. So the question is How often do you water. John

At least 2 inches if you have sandy soil

Dig a hole in the patch. Insert a piece of four inch PVC. After the backfill settles spin out the pipe when you want to feel the dampness you have created. Your hand in the hole is a good determination of how deep you have watered and how well. Stick the pipe back, in the hole for future use.

John I think the only way to water is to get your hands into the soil and feel what the soil is like. Have a look at different places round the plant because they are big plants and you want all of those roots working for you. The soil would ideally be moist all the time with plenty of available water and air. So I think when watering a little and often is the key I hope this helps Ian
