So I now have 4 beauty AG's from Beaverton Oregon lovin the California Sun. Question: How can I tell at a young age which way to point them. I have limited space and direction is important. Can one tell by leaf development which way she will grow? Help in SLO?

Your main vines direction will be opposite the first true leaf. You'll know the first leaf apart from the seed leaves. Seed leaves are oblong shaped and the true leaf look just like a regular leaf, only much smaller. Yes, it's about time we saw spring!

Opposite? First leaf will open right? So when the leaf opens which way do I turn the plant? With the open leaf (Pointy end) pointing towards the direction I want or the other way around?

If the first leaf opens to the right, the plant will start to vine to the left. I start my plants indoors and when I see the first true leaf, I put the plant in the ground so it will vine in the direction I want it to.

general rule is have the first true leaf point at you and you look out in the direction you want it to vine....doesn't mean the plant won't have other ideas! LOL

The plant will run OPPOSITE the direction the first true leaf is pointing about 70% of the time. So point the first true leaf to the back. The other 30% of the time you will curse ever reading this.

Holy Moly! 70% odds is not bad though. I'll take that in Vegas anytime!

I've done it this way as well. Once my mainvine came out about 60 degrees from where I thought it would. It wasn't much trouble turning it where I wanted it to go. I just had to be careful and patient(trained it gradually during the warm part of the days, over several days).

Good advice from D14...only move vines during the warm part of the day...cool mornings tend to make vines brittle and will snap in a very small amount of movement...wait till vines have warmed up to attempt even the smallest of adjustments...sorta nu-B with experience speaking!!! Peace, Wayne PS...experience with screwin up...that is???!!!

I always seem to think that the plant will go whatever way you sort of nudge it and coax it to go. When they start to get top heavy it's easy to lean them one way or the other with stakes.
