I'm trying to gauge which day I should start my seeds. I realize there is some variance. In general, what do you estimate the number of days between seed starting, and transplanting out into the garden, to be?

5 to 7 days at most in a 4" peat pot. Less is better.

I set mine out just a few days after they sprout. I wait until I see the first true leaf so I have an idea which way the main will run. I want to get them in the ground before the roots start coming out of the peat pot.

Watch the tap roots. I use oversized PVC pipes that are 14" deep & the tap is usually visible on the bottom in 5-7 days. The key is to get them in the ground before that root starts circling to avoid establishment issues.

How do you know what way the vine will run by the first true leaf?

Thanks for the help! I guess I can wait a few days longer to start gemination; than I had planned. I've grown these things for two seasons already, but never made a mental note of this.

I agree with the first true leaf. Then plant.
