I have noticed at some admirable patches I have seen (Jutras, Sperry, Larue) that the leaves at the first 5-6 ft along the main and those 6-7 sidevines....have been removed. The soil has also been removed so these portions of the vines are not buried. Otherwise the leaf canopy is mature and healthy. I believe they are removed so that the vines can stay drier and not rot. At what point in the season are these leaves removed?

I take off mine in the little zone there when they begin to weather, that's about August (first or so week). You're exactly right, it's for added airflow on the oldest (most susceptable) section of the plant. AleX Noel.

Now that I think of it...in the past I have allowed that area to regenerate...bringing the patch back up to full leaf status...this year I'll remove the dying grown and captan the area. Thanks Alex.
