I have got a backup seedling the 523 olsen 05 EST (707 Toftness x 628 Olsen 03 the 628 is 707 x 805), that makes me feel like I should grow it. The reason is that it was out of the dirt in 3 days (after only filing it and placing directly in the starting soil) and it has big cot leaves. I mean the cot leaves are at least 40-50% bigger then any of my other seedlings, and it was started a day or 2 later.

Anyone ever felt like this before? A good sign, or just dreaming on my part?

I am so glad the season has started ;-)

Shannon, do you really think that Mr Checkon thought anything about slow and steady?

All of Bryan's 805's are the worst looking seedling you could imagine. Scrawny, puny and looks like they been thru hell. I hear the 723 is the same way. I have started looking for those early characteristics. I think they put everything into the roots. Like thay say were not growing salad.

Owen, I think the health and condition of the seedling is playing a role, but for the future of the plant only a little. Keep in mind, germination time is only 2 days in the 120 day lifetime of the plant. Consider what all may happen in the next 118 days. To get a good seedling is an importend, but only the first step on the long ladder.

Owen, I think it is pyschological. I think an average grower will (unconsciously) treat plants from his or her own seeds just a little bit better than the others. So, go for it.

I do not believe that germination "vigor" has anything to do with the size of the pumpkin it produces! Last years Puyallup Fair winner was the punniest of the litter! I almost threw it out!

Interesting. I have an ugly looking, wierd, tiny, lobe curled, twisted looking 848* seedling and a beautiful big 471*. Makes me crazy ...

now if you see some religous figure's image in the leaves then that might be a sign... ?

last year a friend of ours lost his plants to frost.
we had this terrible looking seedling. half of the seed leaves looked deformed and it was scrawny looking.
we were ashamed to give it to anyone but this guy wanted it, drove 50 or so miles to pick it up.
and, when he brought the results to our weigh off ended up with 1,333 lbs.
i guess looks dont matter when it comes to seedlings. health yes, looks no.

My motto is "fast and steady wins the race"! Slow and steady might be good for really long marathons, but with the 1500 metre dash (or with growing giant pumpkins) I prefer FAST and steady. But steady is crucial, can't eliminate that.

How-about a seedling that has three cot leaves? I've had one of those this year.

Remember...we're dealing with "mutants" here! Weird things will make their appearance...ie. double vines, ect.
