When planting two plants, back to back and plan on training them in the opposite direction, how far apart do you plant those two plants? (Have I made this question sound more confusing then it should be?). Thanks for the advice and let me know if I can make the question more clear.

Hey Dave, I remembered reading the attached post and thought it might help. Opinions vary quite a bit but it should help. I guess enough room to allow a person to work around it would be fine - 3 to 5 feet.

Thanks a bunch, it just what I needed to know. I'll be starting my seeds tomorrow and will plan on planting them 3 to 5 feet apart (probably 3 feet to give me as much growing room as possible).

I've heard/seen/done just 1.5-2'. There is so much soil that roots will never compete for space. Just my opinion, but I do feel very safe. (Try puting one plant two feet to the side of the other by moving each staarting spot the opposite direction of the other 1 foot. Slightly different secondaries won't matter. This will decrease your wasted space ALOT.) AleX Noel.

you might want to consider the five ft in between rather than three ft.

the base of those plants needs some space to spread there roots

I wouldn't be worried about roots competing for space. But, I would be worried about competeing for water/nutrients. Nevertheless, I am considering growing back to back. I didn't really think of it as an option before. But, now I think that I should.

I guess when you think about it, 2 more feet (1 for each plant) is not that much. All right, 5 feet sound like a plan.

Hi! Thought I'd chime in, i'm trying back to back this year and have given 5 ft in between, I'm not too concerned on the root issue,I'm more concerned on space to get in and move around without damaging any vines etc due to hose and other stuff, like me. anyhow we'll see what happens, hope you all have success!

Dave, I think 5-6 ft is good ... you can always angle back the first couple secondaries on each side- or let some tertiaries grow back to help fill in the space.
