Just some addvice regarding seeds starting.
1. Make sure that you start two sets of seeds using seperate methods. Start one set of seeds about a week before the others. This way if one method fails you have back -up seeds for the other method. Find the method that works best for you.
2. Make sure you don't get your seeds to wet. Very wet conditions can sause the seed to rot. If you use dirt make sure that its moist not mud. If you touch the dirt and dirt sticks to your fingure it is probably moist enough. Just make sure you water your soil so that it is not soaking wet. If you start your seeds in paper towels run the towel under warm water so its wet. Then sqeize it so that most of the water is out and the towel is damp.
3.MAKE SURE YOU USE A ACURATE THERMOMETER TO MEASURE TEMPATUR. Its very easy to frie your seeds. Temptures between 75-90 degrees ferinhite work good. I like 80-85.
4. Lastly if wether conditions in your area are cool in spring make sure you have some way to protect your seedlings from the elements. I like to have some thing ready to go before i plant.
5. Don't use a ton of fungicide on your seeds. To much can injure them. I personally do not use it beecause the last time i did the roots of my seedlings were mutated and the never got planted.

These directions should help you out. I know stuff like this has been written before but its is always good to get this info out there at this time of year. All i can say is use caution with your seeds. My first two years i killed my first batch of seeds. Trust me it is depressing to see them rot.

filing is optional, seeds go point down, or sideways is my favorite:) Jimmy

Like Jimmy says, planting seed horizontal helps to shed the seed coat as it breaks thru the soil surface!
