I am finding I have huge quantities of natural carbonates in my soil...upwards of 20%. I would like to hear from others that know they have this type of soil and have still had success growing large pumpkins. I am certain my management of this soil type has not been as good as it could be. However, I am learning but would be nice to hear from others.

Judging from the response, not too many? My soil is quite calcareous. After studying all that I can, the only conclusion that I come to is lots of organic matter! The only other thing might be delving into humic acid, but I haven't tried that route.

I tried to get a calcareous support group going, but it died by way of depression among the potential invitees... (well, sort of... I don't want to talk about it...)

Cliff,
Lets talk about what you did regarding nutrients and your levels. I would like to know how they compared to mine.

Actually I haven't had a soil test in a while. My soil is so think and heavy that I've decided to put nothing but organic matter and natural ferts on it. My salts got WAY out of wack.... so I decided that I will no longer try to figure out "a bag of this and a bag of that", I just put on compost and use things like fish and seaweed.
I suppose that this fall I ought to bite the bullet and get another test. Oh, on my website... the test listed from the fall of 2003 is the latest...
