i have a dumb question. what percent of nutrients does the stump provide to the pumpkin compared to the main vine and compared to the side vines? thanks bob

The only way to know would be to do a vascular system flow analysis. We've had some pretty lengthy discussions here about the AG's Sink/Source relationship. The hobbyist grower doesn't have the resources to do radio-isotope traces & the farmer doesn't car. Edu's don't spend research monies on plants that don't fuel the economy (Roses) or feed people.

Much of the answer has to do with where on the vine the fruit is set. Some very impressive fruit have been grown after the basal crown (or stump) was lost due to insects, disease or patch elephants.
