Last night I went out to check on my 1016 Daletas and found that there was a crack starting to develope going across the grain of the main vine. I had one other plant do this several years ago and it became was a total loss. I've got to make a decision on what to do with this plant because I may just start over with another seed but I'll have to do it soon. Does anyone have any experience or advise on what to do with this sort of problem I am having with the 1016? This plant appears like it might be a double flat vine also but so far there are no mutations of any sort and the vine looks like it is rounding out the further out it grows. Any advise would be appriciated! Vince

I agree with Gary. It looks like the vine was nicked by something. If I saw that on one of my vines, I wouldn't even think of starting another seed. If it does get worse, or if you do get an unmanageable flatvine, you could train a secondary to take over as the main. You'd be way ahead doing this, than starting another seed IMO. A doulble vine will exhibit two leaves coming out at the same place, like twins I think. Good luck!

Steve, I saw Mikes post but he has a different situation because his vine cracked with the grain of the vine and mine goes perpendicular to it. I fear that having a crack perpendicular to the vine may reduce size potential because of the interuption in the vascular system of the vine but I am only guessing at this and would like to know what others have to say. My other worry is that if it has done this once, will it continue making new cracks further down the vine as it grows?

Vince, that crack is very small, nothing to worry about unless it gets bigger or if the vine keep breaking more.

Vince, keep it going dude....if anything, it will heal over and never be thought of again. Even if it gets larger it is no big deal.
Keep it and lets have a little head-to-head duel with our 1016 plants this year. Gotta give you the California weather advantage early on....but the Pacific Northwest has seen alot of big fruit the past few years. You in?

Glenn, as long as it holds together I'm in :-) but you have a much greater advantage up there with those mild days and long hours of sunlight. This will be fun.

It has happenend to me quite often in the past splits about a third of the circumferance will repair themselves over time,my 709 03 had two splits on opposite sides of the main.Keep your fingers crossed and hope the growing tips don't get blown right off!
