Man, Will it ever stop raining and warm up here in the Northeast? Average night time temp is low 40's, got into the 30's last night. Plants just sit there, doing nothing. I do see warm weather coming next wednesday, but itis frustrating. Lost the first true leaf from the 1354 yesterday, down to 2nd and 3rd trues left. I have 707 Toftness as backup waiting in the wings. I have 2 more plants ready for action (996 Bobier and 1144 hester).
Warm up damn it!

I hear ya, My plants have been outside now since April 30th, they are stillo chugging along but at a slow rate. its been raining non stop for 12 days straight now, with day time temps between 12-18 c. Nights on the other hand have been COLD its been staying around 3-5 C for over a week straight now plants are still growing but slow. Night times I'm still able to keep the greenhouse around 55-60 F with just the heat collected dureing the day.

I had my back-up (1097 Beachy) in a Wall of Water. About a week and a half ago, it was so cold for so long that the plant froze solid inside the Wall of Water. The HIGH temp for the two days was about 28 degrees.

Seems to be the same everywhere. Even as far down as Virginia the nights are still in the mid to high 40's. Todays high was 66 degrees here in Central Va. Forecast is for a warm-up middle of the week so we will keep our fingers crossed. Hope you guys have good luck!

It was warmer than normal for all of April, then May got here and bam, its cold. I put one plant out a couple weeks ago and its just sitting there doing nothing, but its alive. The others are all indoors getting more and more root bound. I wanted to finally get them out this weekend, but its supposed to be around 35 for the lows for the next 3 or 4 days. I'm not sure which is worse being root bound, or putting them out in the cold. I wish we woulda had a cold wet April and a warm May.

That is a great question, given the predicament, which is less damaging, outside in a cloche going no where with cold nights and wet cold days, or inside at the same growth rate getting rootbound?

We are expecting a hard freeze tonight mid to low 20's,after 2 frosts this week. We have had 2 days of full sun, the rest mixed with showers. I did some soil temp tests this morning early just to see what's going on. Bare field dirt 43 degrees, unheated hoops, bare dirt 53 degrees, heated hoop with plastic ground cover 64 degrees, heated hoop/plastic/cables 74 degrees. Guess what I will be doing next year?

Good point Rock. I still have one plant left in the pot waiting to go in. the seed was started the same day as my 3rd plant that went in the ground last week. will keep a record of the two see which one sets fruit first. another question? three weeks ago i started thrity-five gallons of manure tea. will the plants like ice-manure-tea? should i wait a few more weeks..lol i bet we all wake up one morning soon it will be in the 90s than we will be takling about misting and keeping the plants cool.

When you plant this early on the gamble sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you. :) The weather is acting more normal than abnormal. The New Moon is the 27th. Warming weather normally preceeds the new moon. I believe that is the prediction. We shall see.

and sometimes the bear DOES chit in the buckwheat instead of the woods !! Around here warming weather usually precedes the 4th of July,,who knows about the moon?
We'll all have a good grasp on things come mid October.

Sounds like June here in the Pacific Northwest. Good thing pumpkin plants don't look at thermometers. Last year we were way behind with a cool and wet spring. Pollination in the Rio Verde patch was 2 weeks behind schedule. Still ended up with PB's in both green and orange. Being bold and lazy this year. No cloche has risen in the patch and nothing is dead yet. These babies are on their own this year I have other fish to fry. Gotta catch them first of course.

Glad I'm not the only one seeing those 'early spring' temps so late in the spring!! About 1/2 of my plants are growing small leaves and shoots (size more like mini-pumkin plants - not GP/GS)...... A few are growing medium-sized leaves...
The temp has raised by 10 degrees this week - and I'm noticing that the newer leaves are developing larger sizes.
Only lost one out of over 2 dozen GP/GS seedlings planted so far...

Just looking at the long range forecast here and we are set for quite a warming trend towards the end of this week and extending through the 10-day forecast. Highs in the mid to upper 80's, lows in the 60's. Maybe now we will see some action! Ed, I'm sure you are probably seeing much the same forecast.

Same here Ed, I had to put up a small wind block to keep the plants from getting battered so bad in the wind.

Finally!!! 54 degrees tonite, and upwards of mid 70's tomorrow! WOOHOO>> Next 7 days has 55 degrees at night and low 80s on the radar! I can't wait because my plants have been just sitting here doing nothing. I actually am getting more growth out of my backup plants stuck inside in iccream containers than I am with my two prime spots in the patch! I put the 707 Toftness in the patch tonite in between my 898 and my 1354. I may run it out for a while and use it as a pollenator. I love the color genetics Bart put into the 707 and am suprised it hasn't been grown more often.
